I aim to portray a suggestive reality in my work, hoping to evoke
emotion and memories within viewers. I convey an imagery that any person
can envision themselves taking part in. The narrative scenes in my paintings are
constructed from things I have witnessed that may not hold significance to
most. This is because the instances which I find myself observing are often
unsolicited; like the facial expression of someone checking their grocery list at a
store, or the passing of an object from one set of hands to another.
I view the mundanity of many instances as romantic in this way. Can’t
anything be a spectacle if you are looking close enough? I bring attention to
what may be hidden in plain sight by looking past what is directly in front of
me and using that practice to guide my compositions.
The cropped compositions in my work encourage viewers to closely
analyze the figures’ expressions, therefore experiencing the vulnerability that
people face when existing within a crowd or solitude itself.
