Alice Pixley Young

Alice Pixley Young (b. Washington DC) creates immersive installations of moving shadows, hand-built miniatures, and lush, hypnotizing video. Her 2D and 3D works vary in material and process referencing Land Arts, the Hudson River School, art history and women’s labor. Young’s interest in history and labor is visible in the materials she uses: from ashes for temporal wallpapers, hand-cut tarpaper for large scale paper cut installations, salt-crystalized gouache drawings, to the lost wax process for cast glass sculptures. These materials echo the human history of resource extraction and labor and build on the mythologies of her narratives to create seductive and unsettling tableaus.
