Joseph Burwell is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York whose work spans drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation, combining meticulous craftsmanship with speculative concepts. His themes often revolve around the intersection of science and the supernatural, creating intricate narratives that question the structures of history and belief by using architectural forms and archeological artifacts to contemplate mythological production.
Burwell has taught at Loyola University and Tulane University in New Orleans, Penland School of Craft, and he currently teaches at Pratt Institute. He has exhibited his work widely, including with Miyako Yoshinaga in New York City and ADA Gallery in Richmond, VA.
In 2024, Joseph co-founded the Department of Cynical Delight, an artist collective that questions the line between art and design. Together with his partner Woojin Lee, They create sculptures, installations, and videos that use humor and conceptual rigor to dissect the absurdities of human behavior and cultural consumption.
