Artist Statement:

“Everything you see here was made in quarantine.

We all went through it, and my experience of the pandemic was not exactly atypical, but full of possibly uncommon contradictions. I generally thrive in isolation, so it was a very productive creative period full of abundant studio time, re/searching, thinking, responding, experiments, discoveries, reinventions, new perceptions of the world and attempts to find some light or humor in the dire. At the same time, as for many, it was a period full of fear, death, struggle, empathy, conflict, obsessive parenting and partner bonding, political crises, helplessness, frustration, mourning and anger.

Prosaic as it may sound, making this work, was a way of processing, as it has been during every unstable time in my life since I was young. Coincidentally, the first time I started drawing was also in quarantine, sequestered in a hospital room for a month (age 11) and the first time I took drawing seriously, was also in a month-long isolation, in a hotel room in Vienna after leaving Kyiv for good (that’s another story, all this work was made before the war). Going into the studio and working is still how I deal and how I avoid, one always bleeds into the other. There are echoes of those periods here.”
